Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia 'Sunray'

Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia 'Sunray' is a bright narrow-leaved dragon tree with green leaf centres and wide yellow margins. The leaves gather in slim tufts on woody canes, combining strong colour with the airy cane growth typical of Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia.

The yellow margins give 'Sunray' a fresh, high-contrast look on each cane tip. New growth forms at the cane tips, and older stems slowly lengthen into a multi-headed indoor plant. The leaves are pointed and slightly arching, with the clearest leaf contrast where the plant receives steady filtered light.

  • Leaf pattern: Green centres with broad yellow margins and occasional lime striping.
  • Stem form: Woody canes carrying narrow leaf clusters at the tips.
  • Growth pace: Slow and steady, with height managed through pruning.
  • Leaf margins: Broad yellow edges give the cane tips a lighter, clearer outline.

Yellow-Margined Dragon Tree Growth

'Sunray' belongs to Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia, a western Indian Ocean variety also widely known through the older name Dracaena marginata. The variety is naturally a shrub or tree, but indoors it grows as a potted cane plant with narrow foliage concentrated near the stem tips.

'Sunray' carries broad yellow margins that show clearly in steady filtered light. The roots need a potting mix that dries in stages instead of staying wet around the cane base.

Care for Yellow-Margined Canes

  • Watering: Let around half of the potting mix dry before watering again, then drain fully.
  • Light: Place in bright indirect light so new leaf clusters stay firm and evenly spaced.
  • Substrate: Use an airy, balanced mix with mineral drainage for a stable root zone.
  • Humidity: Moderate humidity can reduce repeated leaf-tip crisping; a humidifier can help in very dry heating periods.
  • Temperature: Keep warm at about 18–27 °C and move away from cold glass in winter.
  • Pruning: Cut tall canes above a node to encourage new shoots and keep the plant balanced.
  • Feeding: Feed lightly in the growing season; heavy fertilising is unnecessary for this slow cane-forming plant.
  • Outdoor summer use: Move outside only in warm, sheltered weather and acclimate the leaves gradually.

Checks for Variegated Foliage

  • Brown yellow edges: Review direct sun, dry air, inconsistent watering and salt buildup in the substrate.
  • Soft cane base: Check drainage and root health if the pot has stayed wet or cool.
  • Loose, weak growth: Increase filtered light gradually if new leaves are spaced far apart or bending toward the window.
  • Sudden leaf drop: Stabilise warmth and watering after transport, repotting or a major room change.
  • Fine speckling: Inspect the undersides and leaf bases for spider mites, especially during dry indoor weather.

Pet and Child Safety

Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia 'Sunray' is toxic to cats and dogs if ingested. Place it away from pets and small children, and clear away pruned stems or loose leaves after maintenance.

Accepted Name and Etymology

The genus name Dracaena comes from Greek drakaina, meaning female dragon. The epithet reflexa means bent back sharply, and angustifolia means narrow-leaved. Dracaena marginata is an older synonym of Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia.

Dracaena reflexa var. angustifolia 'Sunray' has slim height, open cane growth and strong yellow-green leaf contrast.

My Go-To Sublimation Paper — Flawless Results Every Time
Size: 8.5"x11", Size: 8.5"x11"
This is hands down the best sublimation paper I’ve used and the only one I continue to buy. I get a perfect transfer every single time—no fracturing, no fading, and no uneven results. The paper dries fast, which makes my workflow so much smoother, especially when I’m producing items in batches. I use this regularly to make air fresheners and tote bags for my small business, and the color payoff is always vibrant and crisp. The transfer rate is excellent, and it works beautifully on light-colored, high-quality polyester and other sublimation-ready surfaces. If you’re a small business owner or crafter who values consistency, quality, and ease of use, this paper is absolutely worth it. I highly recommend it and will continue to repurchase.

Best Sublimation Paper
Size: 8.5"x11"
I’ve been using A-Sub paper for my sublimation projects, and it is easily one of the best. The ink dries almost instantly once printed, so I don’t have to worry about smudging the design or getting those annoying "pizza wheel" marks from the printer rollers. The paper itself feels substantial and doesn't tear or curl easily. One of the biggest wins for me is that it never jams; it feeds through perfectly every time, saving me the frustration of wasting expensive ink and paper. When I go to press my designs, the ink releases almost completely, leaving very little behind on the paper and putting all that color onto the project. The final results look super professional, with colors that are vibrant and sharp rather than looking faded or dull. It has worked perfectly for everything I’ve tried so far, and if you want a reliable paper that gives you consistent, high-quality results, this is definitely the one to get.
